A Norman getaway where time slows down

"There’s plenty to do here: soak up the sun and the sea, explore nature on horseback, savor the delights of Norman cuisine, feel the thrill of horse racing and polo, marvel at art exhibitions, and rejuvenate with marine spa treatments."

Nestled opposite the paddocks of a stud farm in Tourgeville, Villa Ernest has a story to tell: this former country house belonged to a family of Parisian doctors and was the summer retreat of a widow deeply attached to her home. 'My husband spent his childhood holidays here,' says the owner. 'We were looking for a seaside house, close to Paris, where we could breathe and unwind for a weekend.

When the couple fell for this cider press, left untouched for 30 years, the garden had become a proper forest and the house was very dark. The local agency advised them not to wait: just two days after the visit, they put in an offer. 'At the start of the renovation, the ceiling collapsed… and some of the timber framing was badly damaged!' recalls the owner. Together with architect Laurent Capuano, they rebuilt everything while preserving the soul of the house: the beams, the façades, and its original Norman charm. The garden, meanwhile, was redesigned by landscape architect Arend Jan Van der Host to create a harmonious green sanctuary.

Elegance
and light

Inside, the chic country house spirit prevails, without ever feeling cluttered. Floors and levels have been redesigned to open the spaces to nature and flood the house with light. The décor blends Danish and English influences: soft, warm colors, cozy cushions, a British-style gray-green kitchen, and furniture that breathes.

'In summer, we enjoy aperitifs in the garden; in winter, we read by the fire,' says the owner. Reclaimed Canadian wood used for the extension adds a contemporary touch while remaining discreet. The house can accommodate eight guests across four bedrooms and four bathrooms in 300 m², offering ideal comfort for families, friends, or couples seeking tranquility.

Among their favorite features: the master suite’s view over the paddocks and the Norman countryside, and preparing breakfast for all guests in the kitchen with the famous orange-blossom brioche.

Villa Ernest is the perfect starting point to explore the Pays d’Auge. Guests can stroll along the beaches, try their hand at polo, attend horse races, go for rides on horseback or by bike, or simply enjoy the fresh air. Food lovers will delight in the covered market in Deauville, the fish market in Trouville, or must-visit restaurants like Le Drakar, Le Turbulent, and the Barrière establishments on the Planches. For relaxation, yoga classes with Elodie Garamont or a marine thalassotherapy session complete the getaway.

The house itself invites rest and conviviality, offering a soothing atmosphere where time seems to slow down: from a morning coffee on the terrace overlooking the paddocks to a cozy evening by the fire, the vacation truly comes to life.
