A stylish cabin in the Portuguese countryside

"The house appeals to design lovers, slow travelers, wellness enthusiasts, yoga devotees, and anyone simply seeking peace and a connection with nature."

Set on a green hillside in northern Portugal, in the small hamlet of Laje just a short distance from Vila Praia de Âncora, Casal no Campo stands quietly amid a pastoral landscape. Its anthracite façade, defined by metal lines, blends into the scenery and opens almost completely onto the valley. From morning to evening, the light shifts and moves through the house, filling each room with changing reflections.

The property is made up of two twin apartments, poetically named Onde o Galo Canta (“Where the Rooster Sings”) to the east and Onde as Ovelhas Pastam (“Where the Sheep Graze”) to the west. They are two distinct yet connected retreats, each accommodating up to six guests, perfect for families, friends, or couples looking for a shared escape with a touch of independence.

“We believe in mindful travel, not express tourism,” say Dani and Stefan, the owners. She is a designer, he an architect, a couple as harmonious in life as they are in their creative work.

Originally from Germany, they moved to Portugal, drawn by the light, the textures, and the gentle rhythm of life. After renovating their first home in Porto, Fábrica no Jardim, they settled in the countryside to create a place that reflects who they are: Casal no Campo, literally “the couple in the countryside.”

Their goal is simple: to offer a haven where guests can slow down and reconnect with nature and with themselves. “We wanted a place that breathes peace but also inspires creativity,” says Dani. In 2023, they completely reimagined the house, adding new décor, a wellness area, and extra care to the gardens.

and Portuguese sunshine

Inside, Casal no Campo radiates an easy sense of comfort. Large picture windows blur the boundary between indoors and out, filling the space with light that feels both minimalist and warm. Each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen, a living room with a fireplace, three bedrooms, and two bathrooms. Natural materials mix with bright touches: reimagined Berber rugs, wall hangings from Porto, and paintings brought from Berlin.

Everything here breathes elegant simplicity, that distinctive balance between design and relaxation. And when the need to unwind arises, the house delivers: a sauna, a panoramic jacuzzi heated year-round, and a bright yoga room filled with natural light. After a yoga session, you can slip into the jacuzzi and take in the view.

Between sea, mountains,
and lemon trees

Here, life moves to the rhythm of nature. In the morning, the rooster sets the pace; in the afternoon, the sheep break the silence. You can pick an orange from the garden, walk a stretch of the Camino de Santiago, or swim in the Atlantic, just a few minutes away.

The more curious can explore the nearby fishing villages, visit the local markets, or stroll through the towns of Caminha, Vila Nova de Cerveira, and Moledo. Those in search of quiet contemplation might prefer a cup of tea by the fire or a meditation session overlooking the valley. And for anyone wishing to extend their stay, Peneda-Gerês National Park is just an hour away, offering a complete immersion in the wild beauty of northern Portugal.
