Suspended between sky and earth: a designer villa

"Surrounded by nature and sweeping views, the house invites you to slow down. Late afternoons are especially magical, as the valley bathes in golden light and the sky melts into soft, warm hues."

Welcome to The Yumi House, in Benissa on Spain’s northern coast — just a few scenic turns from the sea, nestled in a lush valley of olive trees and golden sunlight. A home that captures the Mediterranean dream. Completed in 2024, The Yumi House is a brand-new villa, designed with sharp ecological awareness and a deep respect for its natural surroundings.

Architect Andreas Paul Scherpenbach envisioned it as a contemporary finca: thick walls, arches that nod to history, raw local materials… all lifted by that subtle touch we call refinement. The house blends into the hillside, bows to the olive trees, and frames the sky through every window.

Behind The Yumi House are Adrian and Gidi, a Dutch design duo based in Amsterdam — equally gifted at crafting beautiful objects and curating unique atmospheres. “Here, we wanted to create a place to reconnect with the essentials, to slow down without getting bored, and to enjoy the simple beauty of nature,” explains Gidi. Every detail in the house carries their subtle signature: local craftsmanship, sustainable materials, and finishes designed to age gracefully.

“There’s a sense of serenity here — a place where you can truly sit back, reflect, and fully unwind.”

Warm minimalism
& Mediterranean vibes

Step inside The Yumi House and you’ll find lime-washed walls, handcrafted ceramics, tastefully sourced vintage pieces, and soft linen fabrics. Each of the four en suite bedrooms is inspired by a natural element.

The living room flows onto the terraces, the pool shimmers in the sunlight, and the windows frame the landscape like living paintings. “The light here is like a moving work of art,” says Gidi.

Looking for things to do? Boredom’s not on the agenda. Hike the trails of the Sierra de Bèrnia or cycle up the legendary Col de Rates. Prefer something more laid-back? The secret coves of the Costa Blanca are made for easygoing adventures — Cala Baladrar, Cala Granadella, Cala Barraca… names that promise lazy afternoons under a beach umbrella.

“Many of our guests love snorkeling in the coves, then coming back for a drink by the pool as the sun sets,” says Gidi. The perfect routine, really.

And when it comes to food? Head to Ses Feixes for unfussy, soulful local fare, or book a private dinner with one of their neighbor-chefs. Food lovers shouldn’t miss a tasting at Pepe Mendoza’s winery in the Jalón Valley, while wanderers will enjoy getting lost in the cobbled streets of Altea or exploring the lively markets of Jalón.
