In the heart of the Breton countryside, a lovingly restored country home made to warmly welcome families and groups of friends. Surrounded by enchanted forests, a lush garden, and beaches just a stone’s throw away, it’s the perfect hideaway for reconnecting with nature.
A whimsical getaway in Brittany
The house enjoys a truly exceptional setting: immersed in nature, wonderfully peaceful, and perfect for a full digital detox—shared with the local woodland creatures, of course.
La Mareuille is, above all, a spacious and welcoming country home: 186 square meters of pure comfort, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a sun-drenched living area, and a lush 2,800 m² garden scented with mint and memories of lazy summer days under the cherry trees. Tucked inside an 18th-century farmhouse in the southern countryside of Saint-Malo, just a stone’s throw from La Roche-Bernard, the house is fully equipped to make everyone feel right at home—except at home, you probably don’t wake up to a woodpecker’s call or spot deer wandering by to say goodnight.
Wood-burning stove, a dream kitchen, terracotta tiles, and natural materials—every detail at La Mareuille has been thoughtfully chosen to blend modern comfort with timeless charm. “We wanted a simple house, but full of thoughtful touches that lift the spirit,” says Sandra, the owner. La Mareuille—a word from the local dialect once used by old-timers to describe the Vilaine River, back when its currents still danced with the ocean tides—is a true green haven. A place to rest, reset… and never want to leave.
Ivy
and hard work from the heart

In the evening, it’s all about fairy lights and a festive guinguette vibe.
A few years ago, after a life in the city, Sandra and Romain decided it was time for a change of pace — to trade concrete for the Breton countryside. “We wanted to leave the city behind, find meaning, move closer to the sea, and grow a vegetable garden,” says Sandra. In 2020, Romain took part in a concert-video project called La Mareuille, initiated by a couple of musicians. Over the course of a year, he filmed the wild Vilaine River through all four seasons. Autumn mists, winding bends, the return of migrating birds in spring, the calm stillness of the river — it was a revelation.
Later, they explored the river by kayak—and knew: this was where they would put down roots. La Mareuille was the beginning of it all, and it’s where their story continues. After a year and a half of searching, countless doubts, and just as many viewings, the couple came across a listing on Le Bon Coin. It ticked every box: charm, potential, and nature in every direction. “Everyone wanted it,” Romain recalls. To convince the previous owner, they wrote a heartfelt letter laying out their vision: a family home, a permaculture farm, a place full of life. The message struck a chord—and the keys were theirs.
A slow and steady
transformation
When they first arrived, the house—a classic Breton home with stone exterior walls, earthen interior walls, and a slate roof—had all the charm of a sleeping beauty. No heating, rough plaster everywhere, ceilings brushing the tops of their heads, roofs in need of repair, and ivy climbing all the way to the gutters. No matter—the renovation would be ecological and hands-on, honoring the original materials and the spirit of the place. With help from a few friends, Sandra and Romain stripped the walls, uncovered oak beams, restored iron lintels, insulated with wood fiber and earth, and hunted down secondhand treasures for every room. All while staying true to one guiding principle: never compromise on comfort, aesthetics, or the soul of the house.
To furnish and decorate their freshly renovated home, they envisioned a harmonious mix of finds from Le Bon Coin, local flea markets, and Emmaüs. A wooden kitchen uncovered after months of searching, a palette inspired by the surrounding landscape—ochre, forest green, soft touches of dusty rose—and carefully chosen objects, each with its own story. The result is a bright, authentic interior that simply feels good to live in.

No mystery in the charming pink bedroom.
A living space,
from garden to table
But La Mareuille is more than just its stone walls—it’s a way of life. Alongside their holiday home, Romain and Sandra are cultivating a small-scale vegetable farm, a food forest (think rhubarb, artichokes, and dreams of self-sufficiency), and even a future barn to host workshops and artist residencies. In the meantime, guests can enjoy the pick-your-own garden, experience the calm of forest bathing just beyond the backyard, or head out to explore Morbihan: kayak along the Vilaine, browse local farmers’ markets, feast on fresh seafood, or have oysters delivered straight to the doorstep—from September through April, of course.
And always, absolute tranquility. No neighbors within 800 meters — just birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. In short, the perfect country home for clans, large gatherings, blended families, groups of friends, and remote workers looking to get back to nature. For those who love garden hideouts, board games by the fire, or reading in a hammock to the song of a woodpecker. For city dwellers craving a dose of greenery. In short, a place to spend meaningful and truly enjoyable holidays.
"The house is ideally located in southern Morbihan. It’s the perfect gateway to explore the beautiful countryside, the Vilaine Valley, the coast and its beaches, the salt marshes, and Brittany’s rich architectural and culinary heritage."

At La Mareuille, life flows just as well indoors as it does outdoors.
