In the heart of the Black Périgord, where cliffs, forests, and fortresses meet, lies a hidden gem: Le Petit Bois — a charming holiday home tucked away in the Domaine du Bois de Selves. Blending authenticity, elegance, and lush nature, this former farmhouse of the Château de Marqueyssac offers a fairytale escape.
A countryside getaway in the Black Périgord
"The panoramic view of the surrounding nature and the valley’s three castles is breathtaking."
Staying at the Domaine du Bois de Selves feels like stepping into a living postcard: panoramic views of the castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Fayrac, and Marqueyssac; a garden bursting with blooms; orchards; and a sun-drenched, south-facing pool that soaks up the light from sunrise to sunset. Le Petit Bois, a fully independent house, comfortably hosts up to ten guests in five cozy, character-filled bedrooms.
Inside, you’ll find gorgeous exposed beams, a grand stone fireplace, and a kitchen that feels as warm and inviting as a family dinner — plus three terraces, so you can switch up the view depending on your mood. The spacious garden overflows with flowers, fruit trees, shady nooks, and the occasional curious deer. “It’s a place that breathes, where every season has its charm. In winter, it’s all about the crackling fire. In summer, it’s the nap by the pool,” says the owner.
Once upon a time…
a Périgord farmhouse

The story begins several centuries ago, in the 17th or 18th century, when this farmhouse was an integral part of the Marqueyssac estate, perched just above. Even then, the walls stood strong, the fireplaces warmed the rooms — and we’d wager they hosted some pretty impressive feasts.
The Belgian family who owns it today has deep roots here. The current owner’s grandmother was the lady of Marqueyssac, and although the château itself was sold in the late 1900s, the surrounding lands — including the Bois de Selves — have stayed in the family ever since.

Revival
of a stone gem
The most recent major renovation was lovingly and meticulously led by the owner herself. The goal? “To preserve the soul of the past while opening the house up to light and spectacular views.” Mission accomplished.
The original buildings were carefully preserved, from the stone fireplaces and exposed beams to the century-old windows and walls over a meter thick (no need for air conditioning here — the stone keeps things naturally cool). Modern comforts have been seamlessly woven in, all without compromising the home’s timeless character. And the view? Absolutely unmissable.

History
and elegance

Inside the house, every object tells a story. Over here, a family clock. Over there, a lamp crafted by the owner herself — a hands-on DIY enthusiast — made from old colonial hats. The décor shifts with the changing inspirations and whims of the lady of the house.
It’s a subtle mix of natural materials, vintage treasures, family heirlooms, childhood memories, and contemporary pieces that come together to create a warm, elegant, and above all, deeply personal atmosphere. Nothing flashy, but everything thoughtfully curated.
The Black Périgord
as a playground
Here, boredom simply isn’t an option. Paddle down the Dordogne by canoe, hike up to the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac, wander through the lively Sunday morning market in Saint-Cyprien, picnic under the trees by the river, or treat yourself to dinner at Les Courtines or Lou Toupi.
And when you return, the pool welcomes you with open arms, the garden invites you to take a nap, and the pétanque court becomes the stage for epic showdowns. Or you can simply stay put, watching the deer pass by or the last rays of sunlight glide over the valley rooftops.
