A swimming pool, thoughtfully designed rooms, and objects steeped in history set the tone for a stay at Maison Piquecos, a centuries-old historic residence nestled in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré.
An art and history center on Île de Ré
“Activities here include enjoying an ice cream at La Martinière on the harbor, cycling through the salt marshes, or visiting Donin’s carousel in Ars-en-Ré…”
Emmanuel Cazals, founder of the Les Maisons Fabel collection, and his wife share a passion for homes that tell a story. Piquecos, their gem on Île de Ré, perfectly embodies this philosophy. “Every object, every stone has a memory,” Emmanuel confides. Lovers of architecture, décor, and unique treasures, the couple has breathed new life into this historic house, transforming it into a space that is as elegant as it is comfortable.
Piquecos has deep roots: it was once part of the former hospital commissioned by Louis XIV for women. The house appears on a map from 1814, and its name evokes old family lands in the Southwest of France. Located just steps from the historic Porte des Campani, it sits in the fortified heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, amid the 17th-century Vauban ramparts. Renovated in 2020, the house was completely restored to combine modern comfort with respect for its past.
An inspired
home

The heart of the home: the zellige fireplace.
Inside, the blend of design and vintage is evident in every detail: the Soleil vase from the Les Héritiers collection in the kitchen, the cement tiles in the dining room reminiscent of a pool floor, and the uniquely designed zellige fireplace.
On the ground floor, the open kitchen flows into the dining area, designed like an orangery and flooded with light through large arched windows. The double living room offers two distinct atmospheres: a cozy space around the fireplace and a music-and-TV corner with a suspended cocoon chair.
Each bedroom tells a story: the Romy Schneider room pays tribute to the actress and Art Deco, with a direct view of the garden; The Wythe is New York-inspired, featuring a collection of vintage robots; Vico Equence evokes Italy, with ceramics and tiles by Gio Ponti; the Bauhaus room showcases geometric lines and Le Corbusier-inspired design; Majorelle reflects the colors of Marrakech, with Tom Dixon pendant lights and Popham Design tiles. Finally, The Principal exudes understated luxury, with a private terrace overlooking the garden and pool.
Indoor-outdoor
living
The garden is just as impressive: 750 m² facing south and fully enclosed, perfect for enjoying the sun in complete privacy. The 12-meter heated pool is designed for everyone, with a depth of 2.2 meters for diving and a full set of steps for children.
The terrace, Fermob sun loungers, and colorful outdoor furniture create ideal spots for relaxation, while a Weber barbecue makes al fresco dining easy and convivial. The house is designed so that both young and old feel right at home… only better.

Tea time by the pool.
