In the heart of the village of Ardez, tucked away in the Swiss Alps, a 400-year-old barn has been reimagined into a stylish and welcoming retreat. It’s a story of coming home, where wood, stone, and steel meet a generous dose of inspiration.
The Swiss barn, reimagined
"Joy in ownership grows when it's shared. That’s why the doors of Randulin are wide open."
Ardez is a small Swiss village that feels frozen in time, where Engadine houses adorned with colorful frescoes tell the story of local traditions dating back to the 17th century. Among them is Randulin, a former family barn owned by Andri Mengiardi, a ‘modern randulin’—a young person who flies off to the city but always finds their way back home.
After leaving home at 15 to explore the world, Andri returned to Ardez with a desire to reconnect with his roots and a vision to transform the old barn into a place where past and present meet with subtlety.

The renovation, carried out in 2022 with architects Duri Vital and Adriana Stuppan, took four years. In this place, history is no afterthought—every stone, every beam, every detail was chosen to honor the heritage. The result is a subtle dialogue between old and new.
On the first floor, a steel cube separates the living room from the open kitchen, creating a striking contrast between centuries-old beams and modern design. Below, three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a pine sauna prove that modern comfort can blend effortlessly into a traditional setting.
Treasures of the past,
reimagined
You could say every object tells a story. The wooden floors are made from 300-year-old beams, an old pig rack has been repurposed into a sink, and lighting by Louis Poulsen and Arne Jacobsen brings an architectural edge without overshadowing the house’s charm. It feels like home, yet you’re wandering through a modern design museum—a subtle balance of nostalgia and lightness.
The spacious living room with its fireplace, the library, and the expansive terrace offer perfect spots for meditation, yoga, or simply soaking up the sunlight as it dances across Ardez’s decorated sgraffito façades.

Nature, Culture,
and Adventure
Randulin is nestled in the heart of a model Romansh-speaking village, where agriculture and tradition set the tone for a near-stoic tranquility. All around, nature takes center stage—whether you're hiking, cycling through the national park, or unwinding at Bogn Engiadina, a mineral-water spa. Thanks to the village’s strong commitment to sustainability—the first Swiss region to earn the Swisstainable Destination III label—you can enjoy eco-friendly activities that blend sport, culture, and quiet contemplation.
Randulin is far more than a renovated barn—it's a family story, a tribute to roots, and a space where design meets serenity. A place to dream, create, and recharge, without ever losing touch with tradition.
