The countryside, Velvet House style

"A home where stillness takes over, and the structure dissolves into the calm of its natural surroundings."

Welcome to Le Vaudoué, Velvet House’s newest forest gem. This 200-square-meter home, tucked along the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, ticks every box for a pastoral dream. You arrive via a winding country road, park beneath the oaks, and just like that — you're home. The house sleeps up to eight guests: ideal for a group of friends, a big family, or a team of coworkers trading open-plan offices for birdsong.

Three double beds, two singles, three bathrooms, and a fully equipped kitchen for cooking up hearty meals. Outside: a sprawling garden, an oversized table, a fire pit, a sauna with treetop views, a cold plunge for the brave, and bikes to greet the local deer — or ride all the way to the Château de Fontainebleau. Inside: a sun-drenched home with warm, welcoming decor and everything you need to do absolutely nothing (or everything): a fireplace, speaker, TV with all the streaming platforms, yoga mats, board games… and even rubber boots, just in case you fancy a spontaneous forest adventure.

A design
that dissolves into the landscape

“We designed the house so it would disappear into the forest,” explains the owner. Mission accomplished. Renovated in 2025 by Velvet House in collaboration with Label Experience, the home embraces a philosophy of quiet understatement: black timber cladding, expansive glass doors that invite nature in, and simple, refined lines.

Originally built in 1960 as a forest ranger’s cabin, and later expanded in the ’90s, Le Vaudoué has evolved into a model of immersive architecture. “It’s a luxury cabin for grown-ups,” he sums up. And we couldn’t agree more — somewhere between an architect’s hideaway and a modern treehouse, this retreat offers total disconnection… without giving up comfort (ultra-fast Wi-Fi included, for those looking to work remotely in the wild).

When it comes to decor, passion and good taste are everywhere. “Ninety percent of our furniture is vintage,” says the owner. The result? A joyful mix of flea-market finds, black velvet armchairs, time-worn tables, and playful design pieces that don’t take themselves too seriously. The vibe is warm, timeless, slightly bohemian — and above all, thoughtfully curated.

The heart of the house? The living room, of course — with wide-open doors to the forest, deep armchairs, and the soft crackle of the fireplace. The sauna holds its own too, perfectly positioned to catch the sunset.

After a day in the countryside, it's time to relax on the (velvet) sofa.

A whole host
of activities

Here, life flows with the weather — and whatever mood strikes. Mornings start with drip coffee and sneakers laced for a stroll through the forest. Afternoons are for hammock naps, climbing the Fontainebleau rocks, or wandering around Barbizon. Evenings bring drinks by the fire pit, homemade meals (or a private chef, if you prefer), and sauna sessions under the stars.

The surroundings offer plenty too: the Château de Fontainebleau, art galleries in the charming painters' village of Barbizon, the gardens of Château de Courances, golf, horseback riding... And for the active ones, legendary climbing spots just five minutes away in the forest. Or maybe you’d rather stick to molkky and pétanque in the garden. Prefer to stay in cocoon mode? No problem — board games, books, yoga mats, massages, Pilates... everything’s here.
