"By harnessing the abundant sunshine of the Quercy region, the farmhouse operates like a smart home: a seamless integration of sustainable solutions into architectural design."
In the southwest of France, in a region that is not particularly touristy (but historically rich!) between Bordeaux and Toulouse, lies Vitarel. A collection of four houses perched atop a sloping hill, each boasting breathtaking views of the valley below. The Maison, with its two bedrooms, alongside Le Cottage, La Suite Jardin, and l’Atelier, offer equally intimate spaces to accommodate up to 10 people. It’s a place as unique as it is magical, entirely powered by solar energy.
A Californian touch –
in the heart of the French countryside
The main house near the pool with solar panels
Vitarel embodies the tangible expression of Anglo-American designer Max Burton’s vision at the intersection of innovation and tradition. This 1850s building underwent a four-year renovation process, requiring the expertise of around twenty local artisans and engineers in collaboration with a team of architects and sustainability experts based in California.
The property operates intelligently: underground reservoirs capture rainwater for irrigation, nourishing the lush garden, while energy-efficient lighting and appliances throughout are powered by solar panels installed on a canopy overlooking the pool. Additionally, two electric vehicle charging stations stand as a testament to Max Burton’s belief: “Living sustainably can be both simple and luxurious,” he explains.
From the outside, the buildings exude timeless charm: tiled roofs, lime-washed stone walls, and azure shutters paint a picturesque tableau. Yet, once inside, the traditional aspect gives way to modernity. The designer’s commitment – showcased at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum in London – is expressed through custom-designed furniture seamlessly integrated into the decor, alongside carefully selected mid-century design pieces, such as the lighting fixtures by Boris Lacroix.
Space(s) and light
The main house and its outbuildings, entirely rebuilt from the inside out, offer generous spaces flooded with natural light, creating a clean yet sophisticated atmosphere and, above all, a sense of expansion. High-quality amenities – appliances, numerous books, games, art objects, and paintings – complement the whole, offering both comfort and upscale aesthetics. Each room is equipped with a Sonos audio system and iPads to enhance the experience with music.
In the main house, the fireplace lounge is the perfect cozy corner to unwind: two 1950s lamb wool sofas surround a Saarinen marble coffee table. And if one were to choose the most convivial spot in the house, it would undoubtedly be the large table in the dining room of the Workshop, capable of accommodating up to 14 people for a meal with a view of nature.
The perfect setup for a banquet among friends
The play of light offered by the large openings is omnipresent – both day and night. At dusk, the house, lit by original mid-century modern lighting fixtures collected from around the globe, casts a warm glow over the garden, enhancing summer dinners on the terrace. In the garden, you’ll find picnic tables and benches, perfect for relaxing while admiring the sunsets. A neon light sculpture in the old well of the house slowly changes color, adding a unique touch to this serene setting.
