A garden with mountain views, natural materials all around, and sunlight streaming into every corner… Welcome to Areitio Etxea — a holiday home tucked away in the Basque countryside, perfect for those craving peace, nature, and a hint of adventure.

A sun-drenched home in the Spanish Basque Country

"A Basque soul, a lush green haven, and views that stir the soul. A light-filled home where every corner invites you to unwind and savour life’s simple pleasures."

In Mallabia, in the heart of the Spanish Basque Country, Areitio Etxea has everything you could want in a holiday escape: a 1,500 m² garden, a spacious two-storey home of over 200 m², sun-drenched rooms thanks to large picture windows, and breathtaking mountain views — with Anboto stealing the show.

The house offers four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sunlit kitchen, and a living room with a fireplace. Outdoors, every space is made for soaking up the good life — from barbecues and hammock naps to candlelit evenings on the porch. Here, life flows effortlessly between indoors and out, in harmony with the landscape.

A love at first sight,
turned home of the heart

The luminous Areitio Etxea.

The luminous Areitio Etxea.

The story of Areitio Etxea — etxea meaning “home” in Basque — begins in 1960, when a family from Bilbao built it as a summer retreat. “From the very beginning, it was designed for enjoyment,” say current owners Lorea and Elena.

And that same spirit is exactly what they wanted to revive when they took over the house. Their love of nature, beautiful things, and the Basque land led them here almost instinctively. “We were looking for a place that felt like us — authentic, full of light, and a little bit magical.” Looks like they’ve found it.

A place
with heart and soul

The structure may be simple and functional, but the décor is anything but impersonal. Every room is filled with personal touches — watercolors painted by the owners, objects gathered on their travels, carefully selected books… “Everything flows naturally, as if it’s always been there,” says Elena. The result? A warm, bright space full of character, where simplicity feels chic and authenticity becomes a kind of quiet luxury. And special mention goes to the light — it floods the interiors with a rare softness that guests never seem to get enough of.

Because Areitio Etxea isn’t just beautiful — it’s lived in. It carries a story, a life philosophy, and a deep appreciation for simple things. “The compliment that moved us most? ‘Thank you for sharing something so personal without ever making us feel like outsiders,’” say the owners. And maybe that’s where the magic truly lies: in its quiet ability to welcome — offering a space that feels both intimate and open, turning every stay into a cherished interlude.

Even in the bedrooms, the sun filters through.

A stay
between sea and mountains

A stay at Areitio Etxea also means discovering a rich and varied landscape. Less than an hour from the three Basque capitals — Bilbao, San Sebastián, and Vitoria — the house is perfectly placed for exploring. Hike up Mount Anboto or through nearby natural parks, head to the beach (just a 30-minute drive), or wander through charming villages… there’s something for everyone.

Prefer peace over hustle? Nothing beats a barbecue under the gazebo or a quiet afternoon in a hammock with a good book. “In summer, we eat outside; in winter, we light the fireplace with wood from the garden… Every season has its little rituals,” says Lorea. And then there are the birds — robins, tits, goldcrests — keeping curious watch from the windows.

With the apples from the garden, we make a delicious pie.
