Perched above Gérardmer, a wooden building turned toward nature: Chalet Hissala. Designed as a simple, functional, and welcoming place, where every detail has been carefully chosen.
A wooden retreat and its lake
“Guests enjoy the outdoor sauna and unwinding on the terrace after a day of hiking or cycling.”
Proud owners of Chalet Hissala, made up of two wooden buildings, Magali and Lionel have known the mountains all their lives. She was an alpine ski instructor; he was a high-level athlete before becoming a coach for the French national teams. Their paths changed direction after an accident, and from that forced pause came the desire to build something different. ‘We had long dreamed of creating small cabins; it all came together at just the right time,’ Magali explains.
The hissalas, meaning small cabins in the Alsatian dialect, are now two wooden chalets tucked up against the forest. They welcome couples, families, and friends passing through, often drawn by hiking, cycling, calm, and nature. “Our guests come looking for what we love ourselves: a simple place to breathe,” the couple explains.
The little chalet
on the hillside

From the terrace, you can enjoy the view.
The cabin sits on a spacious 4,300 m² plot, gently sloping and opening onto Lake Gérardmer. There are no neighbors in front, no road below, just the view, the forest, and the silence.
Recently built, it features a clean, modern design with wooden cladding, large openings facing the landscape, and a green roof covered in natural moss. The chalet feels as though it naturally follows the slope, blending into its surroundings.
From the terrace or the balcony, hiking trails start right at the doorstep. “It was important to us to be able to head out for a walk or a bike ride without needing the car,” Magali explains.
The cabin
spirit
Upstairs, the living area is filled with natural light and opens onto uninterrupted views of the lake. The space brings together a lounge, dining area, restroom, and cloakroom. It is functional and uncluttered, with nothing superfluous. On the garden level, two bedrooms each have their own bathroom and WC, making the layout ideal for two couples or a family, while preserving everyone’s privacy.
The queen-size beds are fitted with eco-friendly natural latex mattresses, down duvets, and locally made cotton-satin bed linen. In the first bedroom, a sliding glass door opens onto a terrace with a glass Klafs sauna overlooking the forest, a small but much appreciated luxury after a day outdoors.
The decor remains understated, enriched with pieces that carry a story. Venetian and Art Deco mirrors, modernist chairs from the 1950s, the family dining table, vintage lighting, and crocheted antique throws all find their place naturally. Among Magali’s most cherished objects are a photograph of the Col de la Schlucht from the early 1900s and a small bronze figurine from her brother’s collection. “These elements create a sense of continuity between our lives and this place,” she explains.

In the bedrooms, pretty bedspreads catch the eye.
An open plot,
a peaceful atmosphere
The estate is vast, secluded, and set at the edge of the forest, offering a rare sense of calm. Guests love spending time here, on the terrace taking in the view, relaxing in the sauna, or simply reading in the sun. Sunsets are often spectacular. Everything is designed to make arrival effortless, with groceries provided, full bedding, locally sourced toiletries, a sauna kit, and towels refreshed on request. All that’s left to do is settle in and enjoy the stay.
The region offers plenty to do, whatever the season. You can hike along the ridgelines, enjoy lunch at a farm inn like Kastelberg, ski cross-country or alpine at the family-friendly Gérardmer resort, or swim in Lake Longemer in summer. Cyclists will find a real playground here, with mountain passes, quiet roads, and dedicated mountain bike trails.
The area also hosts several major sporting events, including the Gérardmer Triathlon, the XTERRA Triathlon at Longemer, and the Marathon des Crêtes. In winter, the Fantastic Film Festival brings a lively energy to the town.
