Perched above Gérardmer, a wooden building turned toward nature: Chalet Hissala. Designed as a simple, functional, and welcoming place, where every detail has been carefully chosen.
A wooden retreat and its lake
“Guests enjoy the outdoor sauna and unwinding on the terrace after a day of hiking or cycling.”
Proud owners of Chalet Hissala, made up of two wooden buildings, Magali and Lionel have known the mountains all their lives. She was an alpine ski instructor; he was a high-level athlete before becoming a coach for the French national teams. Their paths changed direction after an accident, and from that forced pause came the desire to build something different. ‘We had long dreamed of creating small cabins; it all came together at just the right time,’ Magali explains.
The hissalas—‘small cabins’ in the Alsatian dialect—are now two wooden chalets nestled against the forest. They welcome couples, families, and friends passing through, often drawn by hiking, cycling, peace, and nature. ‘Our guests come looking for what we love ourselves: a simple place to breathe,’ the couple explains.
The little chalet
on the hillside

From the terrace, you can enjoy the view.
The cabin sits on a spacious 4,300 m² plot, gently sloping and open to Lake Gérardmer. No neighbors in front, no road below—just the view, the forest, and the silence.
Recently built, it features a clean, modern design: wooden cladding, large openings facing the landscape, and a green roof covered in natural moss. The chalet seems to blend seamlessly into the slope.
From the terrace or balcony, hiking trails begin literally at the doorstep. ‘It was important to us that we could set off on a walk or a bike ride without needing the car,’ Magali explains.
The cabin
spirit
Upstairs, the living area is flooded with natural light and offers unobstructed views of the lake. The space includes a lounge, dining area, restroom, and cloakroom—functional and uncluttered, with no unnecessary styling. On the garden level, two bedrooms each feature their own bathroom and WC, making it ideal for two couples or a family while maintaining everyone’s privacy.
The queen-size beds are fitted with eco-friendly natural latex mattresses, down duvets, and locally made cotton-satin linens. In the first bedroom, the sliding glass door opens onto a terrace with a glass Klafs sauna overlooking the forest—a small but highly appreciated luxury after a day outdoors.
The decor is understated but enriched with pieces that have a story: Venetian or Art Deco mirrors, 1950s modernist chairs, the family dining table, vintage lighting, and crocheted antique throws. Among Magali’s most treasured items are a photo of the Col de la Schlucht from the early 1900s and a small bronze figurine from her brother’s collection. ‘These elements create a continuity between our lives and this place,’ she explains.

In the bedrooms, pretty bedspreads catch the eye.
An open plot,
a peaceful atmosphere
The estate is expansive, secluded, and nestled at the edge of the forest, offering rare tranquility. Guests love spending time here—on the terrace, enjoying the view, relaxing in the sauna, or reading in the sun. Sunsets are often spectacular. Included services make arrival effortless: groceries, complete bedding, locally sourced toiletries, a sauna kit, and towels replenished on request. Everything is provided so you can think of nothing but your stay.
The region offers a wide range of activities: hiking along the ridges, enjoying lunch at a farm-inn like Kastelberg, cross-country or alpine skiing at the family-friendly Gérardmer resort, and swimming in Lake Longemer during the summer. Cyclists, meanwhile, have a full playground: mountain passes, quiet roads, and mountain bike trails. The area also hosts several major sporting events, including the Gérardmer Triathlon, the XTERRA Triathlon at Longemer, and the Marathon des Crêtes. In winter, the Fantastic Film Festival brings the town to life.
