A chalet where alpine tradition meets modern luxury

“The chalet began as a traditional family home and, over the decades, grew into a simple yet functional Alpine retreat. Its story is rooted in the mountain culture of the 1960s and 70s, which shaped its warm, distinctive character.”

In Rougemont, in the Gstaad Valley, stands Chalet Lion Rouge, a time capsule reimagined. Built around 1750, it began as a traditional family home before evolving over the decades into a functional Alpine retreat. ‘We wanted to preserve the soul of the place while adding modern comfort,’ says the owner, Sebastian Schoellgen.

Situated at 1,200 meters above sea level, overlooking a picturesque Swiss village, the chalet offers a 360° panoramic view of the Pays d’Enhaut and Saanenland. With seven bedrooms and 480 m² of living space, it is the perfect holiday retreat for large groups seeking a balance of privacy and togetherness.

A carefully crafted
renovation

The renovation of Chalet Lion Rouge was entrusted to a local firm specializing in traditional Alpine architecture. The aim was clear: preserve the original character while opening up the spaces.

The wooden walls and structure were kept intact, while the interior was reimagined to maximize light and flow. Sustainable materials combined with aged wood strike a subtle balance between tradition and modernity. ‘The idea was to pay tribute to the chalet’s history and the Alpine culture of its time by blending its original character with modern luxury. We wanted to create a space that feels both nostalgic and naturally contemporary,’ explains the owner.

The interior design, imagined entirely by the owners, mixes vintage Alpine furniture, mid-century modern pieces, and bespoke creations by local artisans. Every object tells a story, and their personal collection of Swiss, Austrian, and French antiques gives the chalet a character all its own.

The amenities are just as impressive: a Finnish sauna for eight, an outdoor jacuzzi with mountain views, a Sonos sound system, ultra-fast Wi-Fi, and luxury bedding. Modern kitchens and bathrooms fit seamlessly into the cozy setting, promising a stay that’s both relaxing and refined. It feels like home—only better.

A getaway
in the Swiss Alps

At Chalet Lion Rouge, time seems to slow down. Sunlit terraces invite lazy afternoons, while firelit living rooms set the scene for convivial evenings. The area has something for every taste: skiing on the Gstaad Eggli slopes, hiking straight from the chalet, swimming in turquoise lakes, or paragliding for the adventurous.

In summer, the Pays d’Enhaut becomes a playground for hiking, mountain biking, canyoning, and swimming. Food lovers are spoiled too, with local delights ranging from farm-fresh cheese to private chefs crafting bespoke menus.
