"An old notable house that tells the story of Provence wherever you look. With its terrazzo floors, plaster ceiling decorations, and cut stone."
They saw in it the perfect family home to welcome their large families as well as those of others. And for that, we thank them. With La Bastide des Chardons—the newest addition to the Maisons Imaginaires collection—brothers Jean and Arthur Bosc offer a more intimate version of the very urban Maison des Remparts. This time, it’s a 500m² stone property, hidden in the small Provençal village of Eyragues. Left abandoned for several years before the duo set out to revitalize this maze of rooms—with attics converted into dormitories, two floors for sleeping and living areas, and a wine cellar—it retains playful nods to its multiple lives.
In these three buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries—the old mill now merged with the bastide and their factory—several occupants and activities have succeeded one another. Notably, a thistle factory, known for their wool, and several generations of a large local family, housed in the main house. Notables, intellectuals, and artisans alike. Their presence is felt through the portraits on the walls and the furniture that the two architects have given a new lease on life. This immersive experience reveals the authentic face of Provence, showcasing the charm of small villages and their inhabitants.
The awakening of a sleeping beauty
that has stood the test of time
In this three-century-old bastide, one can feel Jean and Arthur’s desire to offer a group stay experience that revitalizes the existing structure. This project aligns with their “contextualist” approach, appealing to both history enthusiasts and architecture aficionados. The location continually surprises visitors with architectural details typical of the region—plaster ceiling decorations, wall moldings that halo the building’s ornate mirrors, and essential terracotta tiles on the floor. Delicate designs adorn terrazzo frescoes, and Provençal ornamentations are further highlighted by the carefully selected furniture.
The decor is a delightful mix of pieces reclaimed from former residents—dating from the 50s and 60s—combined with design objects from the Bosc Architectes agency and contemporary art pieces acquired during exhibitions occasionally held in this master house. This diverse and eclectic decor will surely inspire each visitor to rethink their own space once their vacation is over!

To reimagine this building as a family home where one can wander freely, the Bosc brothers created openings between the two structures of the bastide and the factory. On the ground floor, a series of three living rooms with terrazzo floors invites leisurely strolls, while a bit further on, there is a games and music area. Here, a billiard table awaits friendly matches accompanied by the sound of a vinyl record.
Finally, at the far end in the old mill section, one is pleasantly surprised by the decorative shift of the property: a grand, double-height kitchen that also serves as a dining room. Neo-industrial with its polished concrete floor and sleek linear storage, it is perfect for hosting large family banquets and is especially appreciated when flooded with sunlight. This light, filtering through 18th-century windows, is cherished even in the sleeping quarters on the first floor.
The authentic experience
of a small Provençal village
Far from the bustling cities of Gordes or Les Baux-de-Provence, La Bastide des Chardons in Eyragues immerses vacationers in the tranquility of a small Provençal village. This exceptional property is located right in the heart of the town center, making it an ideal location for strolling through the village. Tiny terraces abound, frequented by local regulars who warmly welcome newcomers with a friendly spirit.
“Here, this is the real Provence,” the Bosc brothers assure us. It’s a place to savor with a clear mind, free from daily worries, with only one imperative: to slow down and embrace the local pace. Shop at the village market, enjoy a morning coffee, indulge in an afternoon siesta, attend the numerous local festivals… and embark on excursions that blend culture and nature in the surrounding areas. A highlight is the walk along the Alpilles canal—on foot or by bike—which leads to the village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. “And along the way, you might catch glimpses of mysterious abandoned castles,” Jean whispers to us.
