Art Deco and endless sea views in Normandy

"Nestled on the seafront, facing Omaha Beach and just minutes from iconic memorial sites, La Sauvagère appeals as much to history enthusiasts as to lovers of wild nature, absolute tranquility, and distinctive architecture."

Some houses seem designed to enhance their natural surroundings. La Sauvagère is one of them. Nestled against a small cliff, the villa unfolds toward the vast expanse of the English Channel. Its one-hectare park, dotted with stone pines and century-old cedars, stretches all the way down to the beach. The result: the sea feels as if it flows straight into the garden. "We wanted every room in the house to become a window onto the ocean," explain the owners, Jeanne and Jean-Baptiste. Mission accomplished: whether in the kitchen, the living room, or one of the six bedrooms (including three suites), the sea is always in view.

For lovers of the outdoors, two terraces invite you to savor every hour of the day: breakfast in the rising sun, a lazy afternoon read, a golden aperitif at sunset… The perfect rhythm. What makes La Sauvagère so exceptional? Its view, of course. From every room, the sea is there—vast and ever-changing, at times soothing, at times spectacular. But also its blissful seclusion, set within a preserved park that gives the feeling of being alone in the world. Add to that Art Deco architecture enhanced by a thoughtful renovation, and you have a timeless home—elegant, soulful, and unlike any other.

A story
of memory and renewal

La Sauvagère stands as a true witness to history. Built in 1955, it rose from the ruins of a 1910 Belle Époque villa destroyed during the D-Day landings in 1944. 'This house was born of reconstruction, and we wanted its renovation to stay true to that spirit: honoring the past while opening a brighter chapter for the future,' explains Jean-Baptiste.

For two years, the owners undertook a meticulous restoration with architect Quentin Aimable. The goal: to preserve the villa’s original Art Deco style—its clean lines and harmonious proportions—while subtly weaving in contemporary touches. Glass bricks, graceful curves, natural wood, and period ceramics converse seamlessly with discreet modern finishes.

Scandinavian design,
modern comfort

Inside, the house tells another story, the story of design. Scandinavian furniture from the 1960s and 1970s, original pieces by Johannes Andersen and Illum Wikkelsø, warm textiles, and carefully curated lighting set the tone. The atmosphere is elegant yet welcoming.

"We spent months hunting down certain pieces, and every item has its place," says Jeanne. A special mention goes to the living room coffee table, an original edition by Johannes Andersen, the understated star of the space.

The kitchen, with its retro tiles and spectacular sea view, is the beating heart of the house. It is as suited to preparing a refined dinner as it is to assembling an impromptu picnic for the beach. Each bedroom reveals its own character through distinctive plays of color and texture, yet they all share one constant: the sea as their backdrop.

And because style without comfort only goes so far, every modern amenity is here, with high end appliances, impeccable bedding, and bathrooms designed as intimate cocoons.

"The house exudes absolute calm and a sense of serenity, thanks to its idyllic setting. It is the perfect place to reconnect with what truly matters and to recharge by the sea."

A constant
spectacle

What strikes you at La Sauvagère is the calm. All you hear is the wind in the pines, birdsong, and the steady rhythm of the waves. No neighbors, no roads, only the sea and you. "It is a house that encourages you to slow down, to breathe, to simply take it all in," says Jean Baptiste. The park, deliberately left wild, holds countless surprises: a small stone theatre hidden among the foliage, forgotten staircases, and winding paths that lead to the cliff.

Rituals gradually take shape: morning coffee on the terrace, a stroll along the beach accessible directly from the house, an afternoon nap in a deckchair, a family game in the living room, or watching the sunset with a glass of cider in hand—cider made by Jean-Baptiste, now a producer.

A stay at La Sauvagère also means discovering the richness of the Normandy coast. History enthusiasts will find plenty to explore at Pointe du Hoc, the American Cemetery at Colleville, or the D-Day museums. Culture lovers can wander the streets of Bayeux and admire its famous tapestry.

For activities, guests can perfect their swing at the Omaha Beach Golf Club, explore the coastline by electric bike with guides available through the concierge, or make use of a nearby tennis court. Food lovers will enjoy the local spots recommended by the owners: La Sapinière in Saint Laurent sur Mer for convenience, Chez Roger on Utah Beach for a gastronomic experience, or a tasting at the Hérout cider house.
