A characterful hideaway in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards

"The house has a soothing, restful atmosphere. In winter, it’s the perfect place to curl up by the fire. In summer, it’s all about long, sun-drenched lunches with friends around the table."

Push open the wrought-iron gate, cross a peaceful courtyard flanked by centuries-old barns, and you’ll arrive at Le Clos des Ursulines — a 300 m² home designed to welcome up to eight guests. Inside, you’ll find two inviting living areas, a vast cathedral-style kitchen with soaring seven-meter ceilings, two ensuite bedrooms, an additional guest room, and a separate sleeping area — ideal for two to three couples and their children.

Outside, two private courtyards invite you to linger over alfresco lunches, enjoy long conversations in the shade of the linden tree, or simply soak up the light dancing across the golden Burgundy stone. And in winter? There’s no better place to curl up than by the grand fireplace, a glass of Volnay in hand…

Le Clos des Ursulines didn’t get its name by chance: in 1684, the property became a retreat for the Ursuline sisters of Beaune. But its story begins much earlier — in 1534 — when it was built by the lords of Bligny for their daughter, Barbe Belerien. For centuries, the estate served as both a farm and a vineyard. Today, it’s in the caring hands of two sisters — not nuns this time — who lovingly maintain the house. “Our father, a dealer in reclaimed building materials, fell in love with the place at first sight. I remember walking around here as a child, dreaming out loud about what it might one day become,” recalls one of them.

A renovation
that balances heritage and modern living

Framed by golden stone and climbing roses, welcome to Le Clos des Ursulines.

The restoration of Le Clos des Ursulines, completed in 2022, marked the culmination of a long-standing family project. After an initial phase focused on restoring the roofs and façades, the work was put on pause. “One day, our father said to us, ‘I’m entrusting it to you.’ And so my sister and I dove into this slightly crazy — but incredibly rewarding — adventure.”

With deep respect for traditional materials and a commitment to preserving original features, the renovation was carefully guided by a desire to create a dialogue between old and new. The result is a home that retains its soul, while offering a warm, generous setting for modern holiday living.

A décor
steeped in memory

There’s nothing flashy here — just authenticity, simplicity, and thoughtfully sourced pieces. “We wanted a timeless, minimalist style that lets the old stone breathe.” Every item of furniture feels like it has a story to tell.

It’s hard not to fall for the striking fireplace in the living room, the stone trough in the courtyard, or the view of the centuries-old linden tree standing guard over the property. It’s a quiet, understated way of life — inspired by nearby village flea markets and the effortless charm of well-loved country homes.

Walks, vineyards,
and long, convivial meals

Guests at Le Clos — often families or groups of friends with a love for fine wine and good food — find the perfect base for exploring Burgundy. Hop on a bike and pedal through the vineyards of Pommard, Meursault, or Volnay, meander through the charming streets of Beaune, or book a table at La Ferme de la Ruchotte for an unforgettable locavore feast. Another must-visit? L’Atelier Escoffier, with its vineyard-view terrace and wood-fired oven. For spirit enthusiasts, L’Alambic Bourguignon offers a fresh take on traditional eau-de-vie. And for a chic countryside dinner, head to Chez Armand at Château de Mimande.

But Le Clos des Ursulines isn’t just beautiful — it has an atmosphere. A sense of peace that seeps into the walls, generosity in the layout, and a soul that comes alive when friends gather. In summer, it’s all alfresco meals, children’s laughter echoing in the courtyard, and aperitifs that linger long into the golden evening. In winter, it’s movie nights on the big screen, slow dinners by the fire, and endless conversations over a bottle of Saint-Romain.
