An artistic and craft-filled escape in the Basque Country

"Days drift by as you pick books from the library to read in the garden, hike through the hills, discover wild flora, swim in mountain springs, or wander through the local market..."

Welcome to Hasparren, a small village at the foot of Mount Ursuya, where the hills ripple like waves and the shutters are as green as the trees. Tucked between the ocean and the mountains lies Maison Gamboia — a charming old house, full of calm, character, and quiet surprises .Gamboia — derived from Ganboi, meaning “river bend” — was dated back to 1659 by the local historical commission. Over the centuries, it’s belonged to a family of tanners, and later, to a foreman at a shoe factory.

This is a typical Basque manor house, solidly rooted in stone and crowned with green shutters. Just twenty minutes from Bayonne, thirty from Biarritz — but more importantly, only steps from the forest and the local market. People come here with family, alone, as a couple, with friends — or with notebooks in hand. To hike, to write, or simply to daydream beneath a camellia tree.

Renovated with care,
designed with heart

In 2022, the house was fully renovated by its new owner. “We wanted to keep the spaces simple and open — so that art could breathe.” Out with the superfluous, in with natural materials: local wood, linen, terracotta, and French — often Basque — craftsmanship. Every piece of furniture was carefully sourced or made by local artisans.

And in the bedrooms? Art on the walls, bedding you’ll wish you had at home, cotton or linen sheets, soaps made in the Basque Country, and windows that open onto fruit trees or the forest. In short, a soft, soothing atmosphere.

What makes Gamboia truly unique is what’s grown here: heirloom tomatoes, wild pansies — and plenty of artistic projects. Thanks to the association La Réciproque, the house hosts creative residencies, performances, exhibitions, and workshops for all ages.

“Maison Gamboia, supported by La Réciproque, is a living space for contemporary creation — a place where artists, artisans, researchers, and locals come together to explore, experiment, and share. At the heart of the Basque region, it pulses with residencies, workshops, conversations, and creative exchange.”

Cultivate
your garden

The garden at Maison Gamboia is just as enchanting — with permaculture beds, medicinal plants, and dyeing flowers. It offers rich, sensory experiences led by passionate herbalists and inspired chefs.

When you’re ready to explore beyond the garden, there are mountain springs, hiking trails, the Oxocellaya caves, or a leisurely bike ride to the market to sample some local cheese.“In just 30 minutes, you can be on your way to Santiago de Compostela and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port — or heading into the Spanish Basque Country via Ainhoa or Sare, enchanting villages steeped in legend.”
