Ferme Berdea

In the Basque countryside, a luxurious farmhouse getaway

Nestled amidst the lush green hills, Ferme Berdea, with its white walls and green shutters—berde in Basque—embodies the essence of the Basque Country. This old building has been completely renovated and can accommodate 14 guests for a countryside getaway.

In the Basque countryside, a luxurious farmhouse getaway

"It's truly paradise; everyone feels at home here."

Basque farms, known as “maison labourdines,” are instantly recognizable by their distinctive features: lime-washed walls, asymmetrical tiled roofs, and painted wooden half-timbering. Ferme Berdea proudly upholds this tradition, showcasing the classic architecture that defines the Saint-Jean-de-Luz region.

Laura and Jérôme stumbled upon this old farm by chance during a birthday celebration hosted there. Enchanted by its character, the couple decided to purchase it in 2022. Luckily, the house had just undergone a renovation. Nestled in the heart of the Basque countryside and only 30 minutes from the ocean, it has since become their dream vacation retreat. Now, they and their 14 guests can unwind and enjoy the expansive 1,000 m² garden.

Nature as far as the eye can see

Jérôme and Laura, born and raised in the region, are deeply connected to the Basque Country. Through Ferme Berdea, they invite newcomers to experience the area’s hidden gems in a “home that blends rustic Basque charm with chic modernity.”

From this house with its signature green shutters—a hue common in the region, inspired by the local iron ore—you can explore the Basque landscape, where forests and rolling green hills abound.

At the foot of the mountains, it’s hard not to marvel at the unspoiled landscape, worthy of a pastoral poem. Just 30 minutes from Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz and only a few kilometers from the Spanish Basque Country, Ferme Berdea is the perfect base for exploring the surroundings, before returning to recharge in the greenery come evening.

Inside and out, the materials that define Ferme Berdea’s character have been lovingly preserved: wooden floors, terracotta tiles, and exposed wooden beams. “During the renovation, our goal was to retain the house’s original charm and authenticity while enhancing the comfort of each space.”

To furnish the space, Laura and Jérôme thoughtfully chose secondhand finds to preserve the house’s character, complementing them with a few designer pieces. Prouvé chairs sit comfortably next to vintage Basque furniture, while a contemporary painting by local artist Aski adds a modern touch, creating a visually delightful blend.

"It's a place where biodiversity is very well preserved. All around, there is only nature and the mountains. You can only hear the birds and the cows."

Family gathering

As Laura beautifully puts it, “the house is meant for creating wonderful moments.” The large wooden table in the dining room and the spacious kitchen invite family feasts and gatherings with friends. “People love coming together here; it feels like their own family home, which makes it incredibly welcoming.”

No matter the season, life at Ferme Berdea is enjoyable year-round. When the weather turns cool, breakfast by the fire is followed by cozy reading sessions on the couch. In the summer, the agenda is simple: for the adventurous, a hike up Pic du Mondarrain, or for those seeking relaxation, lounging by the pool with drinks on the terrace while watching the sunset. The surrounding area is dotted with charming villages like Espelette, Bidarray, and Ainhoa, perfect for exploring and stocking up on local delicacies—Bayonne ham, peppers, Ossau-Iraty cheese—to savor the flavors of the Basque Country long after your vacation ends!
