In the heart of Basque nature — Ferme Berdea!

In the heart of Basque nature — Ferme Berdea!

Ferme Berdea in Itxassou

Basque farms, or maisons labourdines, have a signature style: whitewashed façades, asymmetrical red-tiled roofs, and painted timber framing. Ferme Berdea is no exception. From this charming house with traditional green shutters, explore a quieter, secretive Basque Country of deep forests and rolling hills.

Nestled at the foot of the mountains, Ferme Berdea offers an intact, almost bucolic setting, perfect for up to 14 guests. Just 30 minutes from Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz and close to the Spanish border, it’s the ideal base for regional exploration before returning to peace and greenery.

The farm has a 1,000 m² garden for relaxing, playing, sunbathing, or listening to birds. Inside, Basque tradition shines through local artworks and handcrafted pieces. Ferme Berdea is a place to feel at home year-round, with plenty of activities: winter by the fire, summer hikes up Pic du Mondarrain, or a dip in the pool followed by a sunset aperitif. Nearby villages, Espelette, Bidarray, Ainhoa, offer charming stops with local delicacies like Bayonne ham, Espelette pepper, and Ossau-Iraty cheese.

The Basque Country delivers again! From sea-view villas, houses perched near mountains, to cozy spots in Saint-Jean-de-Luz with Espelette pepper in the décor, it’s hard to choose… but why choose? There are enough rentals to tour the entire region, from Anglet to Hendaye, visiting typical villages and sandy beaches.

Whether surfing in Biarritz, hiking in the Pyrenees, or napping by the pool with sheep’s cheese, there’s a charming home or villa waiting. With comfortable bedrooms, scenic terraces, well-equipped kitchens, and sometimes even a local train nearby, the Basque Country truly has it all: charm, landscape, sea, and mountains. Ready to book? (Before your dream home is snapped up faster than a summer night in Bayonne!)

Domaine de l'Ermitage in Hastingues

Between the Landes, Basque Country, and Béarn, take a little height to admire the view: lush nature as far as the eye can see, accompanied by birdsong and the gentle murmur of the Bidouze river, bordering the Domaine de l’Ermitage. The peaceful, bucolic setting almost makes you forget that Biarritz is just 40 minutes away!

Designed for up to 14 guests, the estate spares no luxury: spacious interiors, saltwater pool, jacuzzi, 400 m² panoramic terrace, football field, and a host of bespoke services. Boredom isn’t an option! The former sand quarry, once reserved for horses, has become a giant playground for badminton, ping-pong, or pétanque tournaments, while sporty guests enjoy aquabiking or yoga classes overlooking the hills.

The host knows the region inside out and can easily arrange cooking classes, pottery workshops, homemade cosmetics sessions, or horseback rides along the river.

From the pool, you can admire the wooded hills surrounding the estate.
