Maison Les Années, a 19th-century residence, blends historic charm with modern comfort. Set in the heart of the village of Les Cabannes, it offers a peaceful retreat with a hanging garden and views of the majestic Quié de Sinsat.
A charming historic home in Ariège
“At the front, it’s a village house along the main street, close to all the shops. At the back, it feels like a country home, with a large terraced garden that gives the impression of being tucked away in the forest.”
Perched on the village’s main street, Maison Les Années, named in tribute to Annie Ernaux’s book, reveals two distinct sides. At the front, it blends into village life, with shops and the train station just a five-minute walk away. At the back, its terraced garden offers a feeling of seclusion surrounded by nature and mountains. Built in the late 19th century, the house was long a retreat for a family from Toulouse before becoming the home of Patrick and Marie in 1989, a playground and memory-filled haven for their three daughters, Émilie, Louise and Juliette. In 2021, Juliette, the youngest, and her partner Nicolas took over the house, carrying out a full renovation that brings modern comfort while preserving the spirit of the place.
The house unfolds over three levels, soon to become four once the attic is converted into a space for yoga, a playroom or an additional dormitory. On the ground floor, a spacious living area opens onto the garden and terrace, while a cosy library facing the street can also serve as a second lounge. The first floor features two large suites, one overlooking the garden and the other facing the village. On the second floor, three more bedrooms complete the layout, including a large room with panoramic views of the garden and surrounding mountains.

The décor of Maison Les Années strikes a gentle balance between rustic charm and contemporary style. Natural materials such as lime paint, wood and linen blend seamlessly with mid-century design influences from the 1950s to the 1970s. Every detail has been thoughtfully chosen to create a warm and intimate atmosphere.
“We wanted to keep the patina of time while bringing in modern comfort,” explains Nicolas. “Juliette worked on the lime paint finishes, and I crafted some of the custom furniture myself.”
Among the house’s highlights are the upper garden terrace with stunning views of the Quié de Sinsat, the elm flooring in the Les Graves bedroom and the soft, luminous tones of the lime-painted walls that glow in the sunlight.
The house shifts with the seasons. In summer, the terrace and garden become the heart of the home, perfect for lunches under the linden tree, quiet moments in the deck chairs listening to the spring, or candlelit dinners as night falls. In winter, life moves to the warmth of the fireplace, the fully equipped kitchen made for generous meals and the sunlit banquette that invites long, lazy afternoons.
