The perfect little vacation home

"The house was designed as a peaceful and rejuvenating retreat, offering a warm and soothing atmosphere."

Welcome to the aptly named Pausette ("little break" in French)—a vacation home and a journey through time, inviting you to soak in the soul of a place steeped in history. Perched atop the charming medieval village of Fanjeaux—cobbled streets, stone houses, picturesque walled gardens, it has it all!—this 85 m² half-timbered house likely dates back to the 17th or 18th century. At 360 meters above sea level, Pausette boasts breathtaking views over the Lauragais plains and the Pyrenees. Its prime location, just steps from the church and the Maison Saint Dominique, offers an immersive experience in the history of Fanjeaux, a key site of Cathar heritage.

Designed to accommodate two to four guests—with two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bunk bed—Pausette is the perfect retreat for a family escape in the heart of Occitanie, nestled between the sea and the rolling landscapes of the Narbonne hinterland. What’s on the agenda? Wandering through the lush 200 m² garden, exploring the picturesque surroundings, or cozying up by the water-vapor fireplace when the weather calls for a slower pace.

A truly long
break

Pausette stands out with its architecture, reflecting the charm of traditional southern French homes. Built with noble, time-honored materials—stone walls, exposed beams, and antique terracotta tiles—the house exudes warmth and timeless elegance.

In the past, Pausette’s vaulted cellar was used to store grain silos, a nod to the region’s rich agricultural heritage. Excavations by previous owners even uncovered traces of Gallo-Roman settlements, suggesting that the site’s history dates back much further than expected!

Today, the cellar has been transformed into a cozy little lounge, ideal for reading or escaping the summer heat for an afternoon nap. On the ground floor, the open kitchen seamlessly connects to the garden, offering a picturesque view of the village bell tower. Upstairs, the bedrooms provide a peaceful retreat with stunning views over the rolling landscapes of the Lauragais.

A wabi sabi
home

In 2024, Pausette underwent a complete renovation, led by Marion, an interior designer, and her partner Stéphane. Their goal? To preserve the soul of the home while modernizing it with raw, natural materials—drawing inspiration from wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic and philosophy that embraces the beauty of imperfection and the authenticity of materials.

The décor seamlessly blends vintage influences with contemporary touches, creating a space that is both calming and refined. Every detail has been carefully thought out to enhance the home’s charm. Among the standout features are decorative niches in the hallway, adorned with oyas—locally made ceramic jars traditionally used for irrigating vegetable gardens by filling them with water and burying them in the soil.

A stay at Pausette offers the perfect balance between peaceful relaxation and adventure. City dwellers looking for tranquility will find an idyllic retreat, while explorers can set off to discover the rolling landscapes of the Lauragais and the historical treasures of Cathar country.

Marion’s top recommendations? A visit to Les Jardins de Vaissières for locally grown, seasonal produce cultivated with care; a stop at the charming village tea room, just a stone’s throw from the house; and a meal at the Château de Sibra restaurant, where refined cuisine highlights the best of local producers.
